The calm before the storm ! We hope so. The croakers are hard at work singing out about slumps and all kinds of things. They are the people who grab all they can get on a spurt, and, when a little lull takes place for breathing time, cry because they can't go on ' scooping.' The sooner this class of 'investor' cuts out of ihe market, the better for mining. The mines are now developing. Some will gradually drop out of existence, others will come up with a jump and a bound that will surprise a lot. It's a moat absurd notion to imagine for a moment that wealthy capitalists from all parts of ihe globe are paying handsome salaries to experts, with Beveral years' guarantee, without having information that giveß them good grounds for their actions. No, we h&ve got into a pettifogging way of believing that we are the world, and that if we can't stump up a few pounds for a month or two, things are going to 'bust.' Give it time, and there is a brighter future in mining for Auckland than most people expect, and the man with a little brains and common sense will come out on top. There is very little to report this week amongst the picks and shovels, but they are all more or less at work.

Tamihana.— Will be one of the first at Whangamata to make a splash. Great Northern (Waihi). — Harry Adams' report makes this one of the most valuable mines in the country. 60 feet reef and 8 assays. All chow gold. Dr. Jim (Puhi-Puhi).— -If Fred succeeds, and they all say he will, stock worth £1. CoJtSTOCK. — Weak. What is the matter ? Golden Point. — Lost the gold. Golden Horn. — Surely a call is due ; it costs money to sink, and that wiil have to be done. Royal.— Are they dead? No reports of any extent come out so far. Victoria. — Nathan is slow ; no news yet and things getting very alow in the mine. Agnew is punching away without success. Aurora. — Opening up splendidly. Jupiter. — Investors see the folly now of buying on position. Central.— Rather flat. No move likely to take place for some time. Grace Dabling. — Reefs looking better than ever. A certainty for holders in time. Leading Wind (Manaia). — Workings like a beehive ; getting roads and machinery finished. Investors don't seem to grasp the value of this stock. Gold showing, and plant to crush in a very short time.

Habp of Taba. — The knowing ones are buying all right. Newa from Home will send this stock to a big price. . Jewel. — An anticipated move never came, bat still are good. Talisman. — Will the next crashing come up to expectations ? We doubt it. Victor. — Seavers are not compelled to use crowbars yet to get but the gold, it's not quite so plentiful. Waihi Consols. — Some interested individuals actually tried to twist the Waihi reef out of this ground. Absurd 1 Waihi Extended.— Dead as a door nail. Waihi Silverton —Good old mine. Paying its way and more until lower levels are opened up, and then you'll see the start. Waihi South. — Riggers on the job again surely. Fiery Ckoss.— Make somebody cross yet. The gold is there and won't come out. Waitekauki United. — Hard at work fitting up for heavy mining. . Waverley.— No excitement on now. Is there nothing fresh to drive for, Billy ? Woodstock. — Shares holding their strength on the market. An honest manager means a lot to a mine. Bay View.— Work progressing and good results. Bunker's Hill. — Good old battler. You've seen some ups and downs. Why don't yon show your colours ? COROUANDEL FItEEHOLD PROPRIETARY. — No tenders for grazing out yet. Four-in-Hand — Splendid reports from time to time. The country is rich, anyhow Haubaki North . — Specimens coming constantly to hand. Haven't you got a few tons now ? Add up reports. Pigmy —Coming a little. Welcome Find. — Rough having to go back for more specimens, but will all conconcerned in the mine swear they know nothing of them ? Zealandia. — Someone whispera, she's a bouncer. But we prefer to -wait. Sunlight (Tararu).— A 40 feet reef assaying £3 38 per ton is to be worked on straight away. Will show a lot of mineß around the town. Sheridan (Tapu). — Too many experts to see the show of gold ; it frightened people off. Albert (Tairua). — Steady market for this stock. Will see a much bigger figure. Waitekauhi Prince— Option to float gone, and ground looking splendidly Great Western (Kuaotunu). — Men working struck a. leader, and now trenching for Ascot reef. A lucky dart. Star ov Tairua —The prospecting that has been done is highly satisfactory. The owners are now placing it on the market. Its close proximity to the Big Broken Hill will make it a hummer.
