WAIPAWA

The band social and dance proved most successful. Nearly all Waipawa was present. The O.M. thinks it was a great mistake of the committee to admit so many children, as they seemed to bar the enjoyment of the others in the dances. Oh, what a charge in the tucker room ! It recalled the scene at the Maori wedding the other week. Didn't the band members enjoy the quiet spread after the affair was over. They might have invited the O.M. at anyiute. Who stole the beer and ]am rolls that night.

On the 24th ult. a farewell social was given at Mangere school-house by the residents of the district to Mr Charles Washer, who has just .severed his connection with Mangere to proceed elsewhere. All Mangere assembled to do honor to Mr Washer who is deservedly popular in the district, and many Onehunga residents were also present. A feature of the evening was the presentation to Mr Washer of an illuminated address. The latter which was executed at the Observer office is a very beautiful specimen of draughtsmanship. It pays a well-earned tribute of respect and esteem to Mr Washer. The address was presented to Mr Washer by Mr Kirkbride, on behalf of the people of Mangere and district. After this an adjournment was made to a room adjoiuing the school where a most delightful ' musical evening ' was spent. After refreshments had been partaken of the room was cleared for dancing, which was kept up until 2.20 a.m. Then after all had joined hands and sang ' Auld Lang Syne,' the gsthering broke up. A large number of Mr Washer's friends and admirers went to see him off by the ' Gairloch' on Monday.
