Yakob's Reflections.
I read aboudt dot vater-mill dot runs the life-long day, And how der vater don'd coom pack yen vonce it flows away ; And if der mill-shtream dot glides on so beautiful und shtiil, But don'd vas putting in more york on dot same vater-mill. Der boet says ' Twas beddher dot youholdt dis broverb fast, Der mill id don'd vould grind come more mit vater dot vas past.'
Dot boem it was peautiful to read aboudt ; dot's so ; Budteef dot vater vasn't past, how could dot mill-vheel go ? And vy make dronble mit dot mill vhen it vas been inclined To dake each obbordunity dot's gifen id to grind? And yen der vater cooms along in quandities so vast, Id lets some other mill dake oup der vater dot vas past. Dhen der boet shange der subject, und she tells us vonce again — •Der sickle neffer more shall reap der yellow-garnered grain.'
Veil ! vonce vas blendy, aind't id ? Id vouldn't been so nice To hafe dot sickle reaping oup der same grain ofer twice. Vhy, vot's der ÜBe of catting oup der grass already mown ? Id vas peai mine moder dold me, to leate veil enough alone. ' Der summer vinds refife no more leaves strewn or earth or main.' Veil ! who wants to refife them ? Dhere vas blenty more again. Der summer vinds dhey step righdt ont in goot time to brepare. Dhose biants und trees for oder leaves ; duere soon vos creen vons dhere.
Shust bear dis adverb on your mindts> mine friendts, und hold it fast— 'Der new leaves don'd vas peen around t until der oldt vas past. Dhen neffer raindt der leaves dot's dead ; der grain dot's in der bin ; Dhey both off dhem haf had dher day, und shust was gathered in. Und neffer mindt der vater vhen id vonce goes droo der mill ; Ids york was done ; dhece's plendy more dot vaits ids place to fill. Let each von dake dis moral, from der king down to der peasant — ' Dont mind der vater dot vas past, but der vater dat vas bresent '
