WELLINGTON CRICKET.
My Wellington correspondent wireß : — The cricket season opened on Saturday, with fine weather. There was a large attendance. The Senior matches were Wellington v. Phoenix, Midland v. Rivals. Phoenix only made 28, including 6 extras. Wellington made 102. Rivals also totalled 102. Midland lost 7 wickets for 74. R. Kirk (Wellington) had the grand average of 5 wickets for 8 runs, and Ashbolt four wickets for 14 runs. Benbow (Phoenix) averaged 8 wickets for 26. C. Gore played stylish cricket for his 34. Izard had good luck in making 30. Holdship seemed uncomfortable, bat pat up 18. Cross (Phoenix) hit with his old vigor for 29.
