The Old, Old Story,

A most patient research has revealed the fact tbat our language can boast of no less than 827 different terms, all of which express the state of being in love. Surely we must be a very lovemaking kind of people to have thus lavishly en-, riched Cupid's vocabulary, though it would not be wise to depend too much on the inference" apparently involved. For it would seem that, whilst- we have 827 ways of saying a youth, or a maiden, or both are in love, we have no less than 914 of expressing the fact that So-and-so is inebriated. Ergo, as a nation, we must be even fonder of drinking than of making lovea 1 Not a few of the love phrases are slang ones, such .as "spoony," "mashed," "sweet on," "far' gone," "awful spoons," " dead nuts on," etc. ; but even allowing for what may be called the slang contingent, the compiling.of a list of synonymous terms must have been a work of considerable labour and difficulty, and we certainly think that the full vocabulary ought to be published for the information of ihe love-making public.
