Tfc a first annual carnival in connection -with the Auckland Amateur Swimming Club will be held in the Calliope Dock, on Saturday 19th, beginning at 2.30. A programme of 11 events has been prepared. The entries are all free. The attendance of the public is expected to be very large. For further particulars see adyertisement. — Hemus' ' Torn Thumb ' photos appear to have hit the popular fancy. During the holidays Mr H. turned out no less than 11,000 of these beautiful little -photos, which at half-a-crown a dozen are aa well finished and as sharp and clear as cabinets. ■ . ■ —The Gisborne Standard,* little one horse, rag, just about the right size to stow a couple of pounds of sausages away in, modestly styles itself • The leading journal on the East Coast.' If this is so there must be a fine opening on the East Coast for a new morning paper. — Scholastic Item : — Teacher— 1 Who was Christopher Coluiivms '?' Fritz — 'I dunno.' ' Who discovered America?' Boy (beginning to whimper) :—' Please sir 'twasn't me sir !' —A Kentucldan was sick in the hospital with fever. ' Will you give me something to drink ?' he asked faintly of the nurse. ' Certainly, sir,' said the nurse, offering him a glass of water. He put up his hands feebly. ' Give it to me in a teaspoon, please,' he whispered huskily, ' till I get used to ifc. J — A minister was questioning his Sunday school about the story of Eutychus, the young man, who, while listening to the preaching of the Apostle Paul, fell asleep, and, tailing down, was taken up dead. ' What,' he said, 'do we learn from this solemn event?' Then the reply from a little giil came pat and prompt : ' Please, sir, ministers should learn not to preach too long sevmon3.'
