— ' Did you read in the papers, Jennie, what an awful funny way the Emperor William and the Emperor Francis Joseph took to salute each other ?' 'No, I didn't, see it, Fred, how was it?' ' Oh, I can't explain it, but I think I can illustrate it.' ' How was it?— do show me.' t , r' 'Oh: You hateful thing !' —Daughter—' Mother, I believe I'll make Charlie an angel cake.' Mother—' What ! Before you are married ? Why, child, you are crazy. How do you know but what he may eat some of it ? If your poor dear father had eaten some of my cake before we were married, you would have been compelled to seek a different parent.' — For sometime past it has becomo the tashion among aeronauts to desert their balloons in mid-air and come back to earth via parachute. Uow as many of these cranks can testify, the parachute is not what it is cracked up to be. Occasionally a man reaches the earth in a soft, gentle manner, but the umbrella i 3 just as liable not to work and then something 1 is bound to bust wide open. Professor Hogan, of Jackscns, Michigan, made a balloon ascension a few days since, and after getting as near heaven as he probably ©ver will, some 4,000 feet above earth, lie stepped out into space with the parachute in liia hand and began to descend. For some reason the contrivance failed to spread out its white wings till he had got half way to his native sod, and he began to offer up prayers, but finally the thing began to swell out and although he hit a marsh hard enough to bury him up to his ears, etill no eerious damage was done. The Professor, though, has thought the matter over, pictured to himself how he would have looked had he struck hard g-iound, instead of a marsh, and the chances are that he v/ill try no more experiments with a parachute.
