PRETTY HANDEASKET.
This little basket is easily and quickly made., ni] J is very useful, be:-idcs locking effective. Materials required aio 2 balls of :\'o. 10 crochet cotton coloured, 'a medium -sized steel hook, a little starch, a, gill of spirit varnich, and 2.1 yards of coloured ribbon to eonliast, 2 inehc^wide. Commence at the bottom of the basket. Make a chain of GO. Ist row- -2 double into the second from the needle, I. double into each of 37 chain, 2 double into r.'itli chain. Now work 2 double into the first stitch on the other side of chain, double ric-M across, and 2 double K^ain into the other corner. 2nd row— Work double right round, increasing at oach eoirer a3 before, and piclui'g up the back loop only; do 12 more rows like the second row. Tins finishes the bottom of theba&ket. i/Hhrow---* 1 2 treble, 2 chain, 2 chain, 2 treble into 1 double, miss \'> and repeat from * all round. KUh row- 2 treble, 2 chain, 2 treble into every hole foimed ly 2 chain in the loth row. jfth row— Like the Kith. 18th row— Vesten on in a picot of 17th row, and make 8 chain— this is to foras the first .long treble — now wind the cotton si:-: times round the hook,, insert in the same stitch, and draw cotton through ; draw through two loops at a time until all are. worked oJr, ;•> chain, and repeat all round, llith row — Like the 15th working the pieots between "2 lorn- trebles. 20th and 21st rowsLike the -Kith." 22nd row— Like the 18th. 23rd row — L ike the L'.tt h. 2-Ath row— 3 treble, 2 chain- :.'. treble into every picot. This finishes the crcchei. part. If a rough bottom is wished, you can turn the bottom before beginning the opera work, l-'or the handles make a chain of 55, and work round both sides in double crochet, then double the work together and. crochet tho two edges together, this makes it round ; sew ahandle on each side. To dress the basket, wring it through stiff starch, and stretch it on an old basket similar in shape, or upon a wooden block pin out each point of the top row, and let it remain till quite dry; then remove from the block, and give "two coats of varnish, lace the ribbons through the long trebles, and finish by putting a bow on one side.
