HASTIXGS HOTCH-POTCH.
Arthur B. lias been prospecting in the back country, and lias struck a patch. He says the coantry is rich and the soil good. George is going to give a barrel of " XXXX " to the Hastings Militia the first time they are called out. The new town clock is to have a large tenor bell to mark the hours. It was suggested that before the bell was ready Heurg should be placed inside the clock to cry the time. The suggestion was negatived on its being represented that he might think himself in Parliament. Wanted, a steady man, with no incumbrance, to ring the Mayor's fire-bell. Thus the old hen sang — Was lovely woman made for man 1 I'm half inclined to doubt it, Yet love pervades the mighty plan, It cannot do without it ; Oh, why did nature love implant ? She surely should repent it, And not the lonely object grant Whereon the soul may spend it.
