QUEER. STICKS
Tlie queer Maori sticks on view at the establishment of Mr "W. Greenshields, Shortland-strcet, are going to Wellington to be shown at the approaching* Industrial Exhibition. While in Auckland the sticks liave been examined by v large number of persons, including several Maoris, who all expressed themselves at a loss to conceive "What possible purpose they could be intended to serve, one gentleman expressing the opinion that they must have been used by the Maoris for ivifc beating! Wahanui, the well-known chief who looked in at Mr Greenshields' when in town the other day, pronounced the sticks lOOor 150 years old, arid said they were used by the natives in the, old days for digging kumaras and other
roots. The sticks, which will doubtless attract attention at the Exhibition, will, I undersfcard, be presented by their owner to the Auckland Museum after they come back from the Empire City.
