'The old veteran, Colonel Lyon, has been appointed to the command of the volunteers in this district, and the force at his disposal to ward off any attack of the Kussians likely to take place is increasing daily. Old men, young men, and boys are all flocking to the standard. TThey are confident that in the event of a fight they will be well handled, and if shot they will be fully resigned, because the proper carrying out of the duty necessitated their sacrifice. It is to be hoped that they will keep themselves in good condition, so that they will be able to -fight for a lengthened period without getting knocked up. To keep in good condition it is necessary that they shouH take plenty of exer--cise. it is also essential that they should consume a liberal amount of good food. In these dull times even a little addition to the daily fare is •a serious item to many. There is one way of lessening Ihe consequent pressure, which is to buy their cheese, butter, and bacon at Eaton's Co-operative Store, next Criterion Hotel, Hobson--street. The latest fire-extinguisher is a liquid, "put up in bottles of about the same size as -those used for lemonade. By all accounts dt works wonders. -
