THE LATE J. M. MACSONALD.
The funeral of the late J. M. Macdonald, which took place on Wednesday last, was very largely attended ; the company of mourners comprised representatives of old and. young Auckland, and also the Thames and Coromandel. To know the deceased gentleman was to become his friend and admirer, the attraction of his manner was irresistible, and during his active career as colonist, he had endeared himself to an extensive circle of friends. Mr Macdonald was born in Canada, whither his ancestors emigrated during the troublous times that fell upon the Highlands of Scotland at the dispersion of the clans, subsequent to their defeat at Culloden. Our deceased, fellow citizen was a blood descendant of the family of the immortal Flora Macdonald, whose devotion to the fallen and hunted Prince Charlie is a matter of history. From Canada Mr Macdonald came to Auckland some 25 years ago, and engaged in the timber industry, then in its infancy. He was a prominent figure on the Thames in its early days and was largely instrumental in starting the Hauraki and Short] and Sawmill Companies. After some j T ears in business in Auckland he retired to his estate, '' Braemar," at Maukn, where he resided till his death.
