CONTAMINATION TO THE GOODYGOODIES.
Tlla exceedingly godly and modest young manwho stands in fear of being contaminated "by association with the Auckland Volunteers, must be of very fragile and susceptible stuff. It is the fashion of these self-satisfied Christians to turn up the whites of their eyes in an ecstacy of self-glorification, and to lay the flattering u'hction to their souls that they are the salt of the earth, and that the rest of mankind are the children of the devil. Now, speaking from experience of these oily and self-righteous hypocrites, I say there could be no greater mistake. If the statistics of big swindles, wholesale frauds, and cool calculating villainy, could be compiled, I venture to say that these people who blow their trumpets at the street corners, and keep clean the cup and the platter, would be found at the top of the list of whited sepulchres. The fact is, however, that all this new-born military ardour of the pious young men is another of those little frauds in which they are such adepts. They want to evade serving in the militia, and if they can limit the period of service to a year, and induce Government to pay the piper, they will be willing to strut about in fine uniform, and mash the hallelujah lasses and girls in the choir.
