THE " OBSERVER'S " SKIT— THE KASKOWHISKE JOKE BEATEN.

Many of my readers will no doubt have observed on . the various hoardings of the city and suburbs during the past day or two a startling poster, containing the announcement of a sensational account of an invasion of Auckland by a Bussian cruiser, the landing of the enemy, and the looting of the city. It is hardly necessary to assure my readers that this exceedingly matter of fact story is purely imaginary, and that it is only meant to arouse public attention to the defenceless condition of the port and the necessity for adopting prompt and effectuVtt measures to protect it from the risk of fa a sudden preditory attack by a swift cruiser. I feel sure the readers of the Observes^ while they may laugh at the vein of humour that underlies the skit, will also perceive an element of seriousness and a moral therein, which they will not be to slow to apply. Nervous old gentlemen and credulous young ladies need be under no apprehension of an immediate realisation of the awful events which the author of the story has evolved from his inner consciousness. The story will be found on the Bth and 9th pages^jf* this issue of the Obseevee.
