MISTAKEN ZEAL OF THE GOODYGOODIES.
The good folks who religiously turn their attention to tract-giving should really " do their spiriting " with a litte more discernment than they use at present, and then, perhaps, their most excellent intentions would meet with more reward. As it is, their "hints to drunkards " are generally enclosed to their most sober friends, while "A Stitch in Time" usually greets the anything but enraptured eye of a mother whose whole time is spent in stitching and endeavouring to make both ends meet in the fullest sense of the meaning of the proverb. But, perhaps, the most ridiculous idea of the whole lot was expressed by sending a beautifully pathetic leaflet, entitled " Stamp on it Hard,"" to an unfortunate man in the hospital, who was suffering from the effects of the amputation of both his legs. He showed it to the surgeon when he came his daily rounds,- and remarked with a smile, " Don't I only wish I could take their advice, sir ! I'd stamp hard enough, if only you would have left me anything to stamp with." The doctor smiled too, and pocketing the tract, left some charming Christmas cards in the place of it, much .to the patient's benefit.
