J. Brett challenges Clarence Hewson to a clingy race for a tenner, arvangemen^s to be made at the Suffolk Hotel, on Saturday, March 7th, at S p.m. W. Wtvrbrick, who has charge of his. brother All's shed, during his absence at Napier, is building a 16ft pulling- skiff, in which he and Alf will row at the Tauranga Regatta. The 20-f t. open boats, Dream and Mascotte, raced again during the stiff blow on Tuesday. It was a case of bail out all around. Dream carried away her boom during the race, and Mascotte won by 15 seconds — close enough in all conscience. They must race again, "as each has now a match to her credit. I would suggest racing for a week f ov a good stake, say £50 a-side, the winner of most events to collar the pool. They would have all sorts of breezes then to fairly try both craft.
away, and. was running back up channel while Mascotte was still beating up to the buoy. The race was then virtually over, and Dream eventually passed the wharf 13 minutes ahead. At no rime was there more than a very light wind, and towards the iinisli it had fallen to almost nothing. There is no doubt bub that the weather was all in Dream's favor. G. Moore sailed the winner.
"Without a doubt Sydney, N.S.W., can beast, or feel disgraced, as she chooses, about possessing the lowest, most brutally ignorant, and grossly partial crowd of hoodlums and blackguards on the face of | God's earth. Every paper in Australia is [ full of strictures on the vile ignorance or unfairness shown by men on the Paramatta Eiver, during the Hanlan- Clifford race. Fancy the Minister of Public Works, in the Government tea-kettle, twice crossing in front, and once actually between the two boats ! Then, towards the finish, the men had to pick their way through a fleet of boats of every shape and make ; while all the way up the river the steamers which follow the race were dangerously near to the competitors. Bah! it's sickening; and they want the world to think they are sports, forsooth. They don't, begin to know what sport is. They are just " shabs." Not all the Bulletins or other journals in the world can shame such scum. It was these sort of cattle who rushed the ring at the MillerFoley glove fight — not dirty blackguards, d'ye mind, bat well-dressed and be-ringed hoodlums. Faugh ! the very act of castiga-
tion of such trash is enough to turn one's stomach.
