WHOM THE GODS DESTROY.

• Whom the gods wish to destroy they first make snad. If our House of Lords (save tho mark) were deliberately bent on estranging themselves from public favour, justifying the accusations of caselessness that are levelled against thorn, and •preparing the way for their own destruction, they •could hardly have chosen more open and defiant methods tljan some of those which have marked their recent action. In throwing out the Eight •Hours Bill they have arrayed against them tho great bulk of the intelligent public opinion and noting power of the Colony, whose vengeance they will some day feel with crushing and fatal effect. In their foolish antagonism to the progressive spirit of tlie age, and their imbecile fondness for old and obsolete forms and institutions fchey are constantly bringing themselves into conflict with the intelligence and political power 0 f the country, ancl frequently presenting the ridiculous spectacle of wrongheaded stupidity, combined with senile weakness and torpor. They are in fact rendering the Legislative Council a, vexatious obstruction and an expensive superfluity in the •Constitution. They are laying up against them.selves a load of enmity which will somo day burst .upon them like a tornado and sweep them away.
