GRAND FLANEUR, WINNER OF THE DERBY AND CUP.
The portrait of Grand Flanevir, ■winner of the Melbourne Derby and Cup, given below, is copied from one which appeared in the ''Sketcher " after the colt had Avon the A. J.C. Derby. It is not a very bright affair, but may serve to convey some idea of the now famous racehorse.
There is rather a good story going the rounds just now, relative to an awkward accident, which occurred not long ago at a very popular suburban hotel. The facts are as follows : — Mr. and Mrs. Dash, a newly married couple, came up from the South for the purpose of spending their honeymoon in the neighbourhood of Auckland. After going the rounds, 0 was chosen as a suitable locality, and the happy pair put up at Host Blank's popular hotel. ■* 11 went well till one night, when Mr. Dash, after being in bed some time, woke up Avith a terrible but unromantic pain in his chest. "Oh, Maria, Maria," he roared "send f»r the doctor; I'm dying, I know I am." " Bosh !" said Maria rather cross at being roused at such an hour. " I'll soon put you to rights," and she went down stairs and prepared a roasting hot bran poultice. When all was ready, the good wife blew out the candle, and proceeded quickly upstairs. There was no light in the room, but she knew her way, or thought she did, and walking straight up to the sufferer, clapped the burning poultice on the part affected. " There," she said, " that'll do you," which it did. Mr. X., the commercial traveller, into whose room Mrs. Dash had strayed by mistake, woke up with a howl, and leaping out of bed, shouted "murder and thieves." I need scarcely say poor Mrs. Dash fled like the wind, never stopping till she again reached the kitchen. On returning to her husband's room, ten minutes later, she found the heartless wretch quite well and fast asleep.
Anxious enquiries are being made after a sleek-looking ex-officer in the Waikato Militia, who not only " outran the constable " the other day, but actually " came the double " over one of our rising young lawyers. He, first of all, pledged Ms forthcoming pension, and then the taste ot blood being too much for him (or rather the spirit of Julius overcoming him) he went straight off to Mr. , and got more money on a second and fictitious order. This the unlucky purchaser forwarded to head quarters, whence it was returned with the ominous reply :— "Have already received an order from Mr. ."
