LABOUR PARTY CANDIDATE. MEETINGS IN WAIHI. GREAT RECEPTIONS ACCORDED. On Tuesday afternoon Mr. James Thorn, Labour candidate for Thames, addressed a public meeting at Waimata, Wailii Plains, in pursuance oi his candidature and was given a sympathetic hearing by those present. He dealt fully with the guaranteed price policy of the Government and affirmed that in this matter the Government had carried out every pledge given at the last election. He also spoke at some length on the improvements made in tho civil and war pensions by the Labour Government and in this connection he explained the social security legislation. lie was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.

On Tuesday evening Mr. Thorn spoko at Wailii Beach to an audience that consisted of nearly the Avliole of the local population. The meeting was easily the largest political gathering ever held at the Beach. Mr. Thorn’s reception was enthusiastic, the wholo audience standing at the beginning of the meeting and singing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”

At the conclusion of his speech, a motion thanking him for his address and the Government for its achievement on behalf of the people of New Zealand, and also expressing confidence in Mr. Thorn as M.P. for Thames, was carried unanimously. At Wailii on Tuesday afternoon, Mrs. Thorn delivered an address to women on the Labour Party’s policy respecting women and children. Nearly 250 women were in attendance in tho Miners’ Hall, and they followed Mrs. Thorn’s speech with intense interest. This was the largest meeting of its kind ever held in Waihi.

On Tuesday evening, Mrs. Thorn attended a combined meeting of members of the Labour party branches in Waihi, which dealt with election organisation. Over 80 members were present. It was reported that the election organisation was well in hand and that opinion in Waihi was overwhelmingly in favour of Mr. Thorn and the Labour Government.
