THE JURY SYSTEM.

POINTS BY JUDGE. BRITISH CHARACTERISTIC. FAIR PLAY TO ALL. [By Telegraph.—Press Association]. AUCKLAND, July 21. "The jury system in British countries works extraordinarily well," remarked Mr. Justice Pair in the Supreme Court yesterday in the course of his summing-up of a case, when commenting to jurymen on a statement by counsel that each juryman had to make up his own mind, and satisfy himeslf on accused's guilty intent, regardless of what other jurymen thought. His Honour's point was that discussion amongst the jurymen when considering their verdict, was necessary and desirable. The jury system worked well, he said, because of what wo were inclined to regard as a British characteristic of listening to the other man, of being able to see his point of view, and to give fair weight to that, and fair play to nil the factors in the case.
