POLICE ALLEGATIONS. MERCHANT INVOLVED. REPORT TO POLICE DAILY [By Telegraph.—Press A ssoeiaiionj CHRISTCHURCH, April 12. Bail of £3OOO was allowed Hugh Lowther when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with .illicitly receiving a 400-gallon tank valued at £S/10/-. The large bail was fixed by Mr. E. C. Levvy, S.M., after hearing a strong iplea by the police for a substantial amount. The total was made up of £IOOO in his own recognisance and two sureties of £IOOO each. Lowther is to report daily to the police until April 28.
Detective-Sergeant Holmes asked for a lengthy remand, saying that a very large sum was involved and many charges were to be investigated. Ho said tho affair was going to develop into a very large one, and several city firms would probably be involved. Mr. W. R. Lascellcs, for Lowther. said the accused was a well-known merchant in the city and wished to attend to his business.
John Searle, charged with stealing a 400-gallon tank, was remanded till April 28 on bail of £25 and one surety of £25.
