TOBACCONIST IN COURT. GAMING-HOUSE CHARGE. GAOL AS ALTERNATIVE. [By Teiegrapn.—Prem Association] AUCKLAND, April 11. As a sequel to a search by police of premises at No. 11, Commerce Street, Douglas Hipkins, 45, a tobacconist, was fined £IOO, in default six weeks' imprisonment, for using the premises as a common gaming-house.
The police saia" that when arrested Hipkins had £97 in his possession. He had been before the Court previously, but not for the last three years.
The magistrate, Mr. McKean: I sup. pose you have been carrying on the business of a bookmaker ever since,
have you?
Hipkins: Part of the time.
