Sensation At Whakatane.
GIRL ASSISTS THIEVES.
STRONGROOM ENTERED. [By Telegraph.—Press Association] WHAKATANE, April 9. Mr. K. Grant, accountant of the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Co., was tho victim of a sensational h'old-up about midnight last night, when he was attacked by two men. The keys of the Dairy Company strongroom were taken from him. The men entered the strongroom, but- overlooked a large sum of money. Tho "hold-up was reported from Edgecumbe. It was stated that Mr. Grant was accosted on the road by a girl, who asked him to assist her to catch her horse,which, she said, had escaped. As she led him through a gate two men sprang out and seized him.
In spite of Mr Grant's struggles he was gagged and bound with a rope to a tree.
The men took his key's and left the girl in charge while they made their way to the company's office. They entered the strongroom and searched for money. Fortunately they found none, but they missed a large sum which was done up in .pay envelopes. The men then returned to the paddock, where they found the girl still guarding Mr. Grant. They went through his pockets and took £4/10/-. Then they partially released him and made a getaway.
The police in Whakatane were noti fled at about 3 a.m. and are investl gating.
