THAMES OLD BOYS.
REUNION SMOKE CONCERT
SEVENTIETH ANNIVERSARY.
MEMORIES OF THE OLD TOWN
The eve of the seventieth anniversary
of the opening of the Thames goldlield was celebrated in a smoke concert arranged by die Thames Old Boys' Association on Saturday evening in the Miners' Union Hall. There was a large attendance of members and visitors, and these were welcomed by the president, Mr. E. Watson, who said the Association tried to keep up the old traditions of Thames. The town was on the up-grade and it would not be long before it took its place once again as one of the busy cities of the Dominion. For a long time Thames had lain fallow, but it had been' ploughed, topdressed, and was now putting forth a great growth. He expressed regret that more visitors from Auckland had not been able to attend, as the seventieth anniversary was an event of importance in the history of Thames. During the evening a lengthy toastlist was honoured and many stories of old Thames were given. Reference to these early reminiscences is made in the local column to-day and also under other headings.
Songs were rendered by Messrs. Fowler, E. Watson, J. Galloway and W. Johnston. Mr. A. E. Pearson acted
as accompanist. Before concluding a very successful and happy function, the president made a strong appeal for more members for the Thames Old Boys' Association. He referred to the Old Pioneer Museum movement started by the "Thames Star," and said the Association would do everything it could to assist.
The smoke concert in celebration 6f the seventieth anniversary was brought to a close with the National Anthem.
