MAORIS AT ORAKEI.
"MUST DO JUSTICE."
MR. SAVAGE'S INTEREST. "WE MUST HAVE PROGRESS." [By Telegraph.—Press Association] WELLINGTON, July 30. Tho position of the Maoris at Orakei, who have been informed that they must vacate their settlement, is already receiving the attention of the Priino Minister, Mr. Savage. The matter was mentioned to him yesterday and tno Prime Minister said ho hoped to take an early opportunity of going further into the details. "We discussed the matter when 3 was at Ngaruawahia' early this year," Mr. Savage said, "and I declared that no action would be taken concerning native affairs without having it first discussed with representatives of tho natives themselves. At the same time, we cannot allow anybody, whether, native or pakelia, to stand in the way of progress. We must have progress, but we must do justice to the people concerned."
Mr. Savage added that when tho whole matter was. dealt with he.thought there would be no serious cause fox complaint by the natives concerned.
