National Insurance.
ROQM^ORfiSCHEME.., •••• 14 MILLIONS IN PENSIONS. After years of discussion it seems as though" rea 1 -progress is about to be made with national insurance in Australia. Since the economic recovery has become more pronounced there has'been a strong revival "of interest in this 'question, especially among the United Australia Party members representing semi-indus-trial seats.'
There has been a strong feeling in' the party room for some time that a ; scheme of national insurance should either be placed on the statute book before the 1937 elections, or else occupy the forefront of the Ministerial policy to be submitted to the people at that election. Two administrators of the British Insurance Department have arrived in Australia to advise the Government.
Australia now -spends nearly 14 million pounds in non-contributory old-age and invalid pensions, and Federal and 'State ' Governments spend a total of : 43 ■ million pounds a year on so'cial-serviccs.dncludiiig old-age, invalid and widows' pensions, child" Welfare, 1 ' unemployment sustenance, and other charities. > .:
