’Plane Dodges Seagulls.
PILOT’S EXPERIENCE
Flying at a height of a few limired feet through driving rain, with visibility restricted to 200yds., a sea of water stretching below, and flights of seagulls to dodge, was the unpleasant experience of Pilot T. McDonald, chief pilot of the McDon-ald-Cooktown-Cairns-Townsville nhniail service, recently. During torrential rains which inundated many parts of North Queensland, Pilot McDonald left Cooktown with 6001 b of air mail and flew to Maryborough under trying conditions. The greater pai’t of the country over which he passed was submerged, driving rain reduced visibility to 200yds., and flights of seagulls, driven inland by the cyclonic conditions, added to his difficulties. As his machine was fitted with a
wooden propeller he had to duck and swerve, to avoid hitting them. Another plane, fitted with a metal propeller, had paches of seagulls’ feathers all over it when if reached its destination.
