Chamber Of Commerce.

ELECTRICITY FOR COAST. KAUAKRANQA RD. EXTENSION. COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING. The Thames Chamber of Commerce Council met this morning, the president, Mr. C. J. Garland, presiding. A letter from the Thames Valley Power Board said it was understood that a canvass oi' the Thames Coast area for the purposes oi' ascertaining whether or not reticulation would be a payable proposition, was at present in progress. The secretary, Mr. J. Kernick, said that Mr. B. D. Chapman was conducting the canvass and had reported he was quite satisfied with the response so far and was confident of success.

It was decided to await the outcome of the canvass before making any further move. Air. Garland reported on the conference of representatives of the Chamber with Mr. J. Thorn, M.P., in regard to the erection of the new Post Office. Mr. Thorn had assured the members that he would do all he could to expedite the work. The president also made mention of an interview with the District Public Works engineer as to the possibility of a road being put through from Kauaeranga to Hikuai. The engineer had stated that there would be many difficulties, but they would not be insuperable. A very rough estimate of the cost would be between £20,000 and £30,000. It was decided that in the meantime the council's action be deferred in view of the fact thai the Borough Council was interested in the project. It was decided to support the Auckland Chamber of Commerce's recommendation that in lieu of a half-day for retail business employees on general election days, an lioui be allowed for the purpose of voting
