Girl Drowned.

FELL FROM BRIDGE

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) TAUMARUNUI, Feb. 3.

A shocking tragedy occurred at Taringamotu on Friday afternoon, when Winnie Elliott, four-year-old daughter of Mr. Jack Elliott, roadman, was drowned in the presence of her mother. When the accident happened Mrs. Elliott, with her children and a friend, were strolling over the traffic bridge at Taringamotu. The girl went to the side of the bridge to watch something floating in the river, over-balanced and fell 20ft. into the water.

The mother immediate dived in and after swimming 50 yards almost reached the drowning ehild when she saw the girl disappear in a deep hole. Assistance was sent for but the body has not yet been recovered.
