Electricity for Thames Coast? The extension of electricity to the Thames Coast road districts was again advocated at Tuesday’s meeting of the Thames Valley Power Board by Mr. J. McCormick, who favoured another can'vass for consumers. It was decided to ask the Thames Chamber of Commerce to assist in the matter, in accordance with its previous offer. Unknown Type of Fish. Early in August Mr. J. Timms, a fisherman living in Kaikoura, obtain-

ed from the stomach of a groper, caught at Kaikoura in 80 fathoms of water, a fish which he forwarded to the Canterbury Museum for identification. Mr. Timms has now received a reply from Mr. R. Speight, curator, in which he states that at the time the fish was received it was not possible to identify the type, so the fish was sent to the Australian Museum, which replied that the fish is being- returned to New Zealand. The report says that the fish is new to science and does not belong to any known species. Threat of Japanese Enterprise. The extent to which Japanese goods were winning markets in British possessions overseas was commented on by Mr. Gerald Morrison, on his return to Christchurch from a tour of eight months in England, on the Continent and in America. Mr. Morrison said that on the return journey he had tried at Colombo, Aden, Suez and Port Said to buy British-made silk and cotton goods, but only Japanese goods were available, and it seemed impossible to buy anything British in these

lines. The lack of British-made goods was most noticeable, and the Japanese appeared to have won the whole of the trade in these goods at the ports he had visited.

Morning Train Delayed. The 8.30 morning train to Thames to-day was nearly an hour late, the delay, it is understood, being due to a dislocation of traffic on one of the lines in another district.
