Fire Menace On The Plains.

The fire on the Hauraki Plains which has caused so much smoke and glare commenced in the horse-shoe bend of the Piako River on Sunday and has since spread up the eastern bank of the river to beyond Patetonga and also eastward almost to the A wait! canal. So far little damage has been done, for only scrub has been burned, but a great amount of damage is possible and, in fact very probable, as there is no means whatever of fighting it and there are thousands of acres of flax plantations and natural flax.
