On Sustenance.
BUT A BOOKMAKER. COULD NOT PAY DEBTS. "PEOPLE DESERVE TO LOSE." (Special to Star). AUCKLAND, Oct. 30. "People who bet with you deserve to lose their money," said Mr. W. It. McKean, S.M., to Geo. Lloyd, who pleaded guilty in the Polico Court at Onehunga yesterday, when charged with carrying on the business of a bookmaker. Sergeant S. A. Brown told tho Court that a man named Bromieh took a double with accused at 50/to 6d. on two horses. Both won, but Lloyd failed to pay out.
The latter said in defence that he paid Bromieh 12/6 and promised to give him the balance in a few days when he received some money which he was expecting. When Lloyd said that he was on sustenance Mr. McKean said: "Good gracious, you are not in a position to pay a heavy fine." ■ Lloyd was convicted and fined £2 or seven days. He was allowed one month in which to -pay the fine.
