Virulent Meningitis.

TOLAGA BAY DISTRICT. NO DANGER OF SPREADING. \ HEALTH OFFICER’S ASSURANCE. i■ 1 1 r (Special to Star). GISBORNE, Sept. 17. There is now no danger of the feerebro- spinal ‘meningitis outbreak in the Tolflga Bay district spreading. The isolation of two households concerned has been lifted and it is hoped the same course ;will be taken with the other by tomorrow.

It is expected that the three patients in hospital will recover. These points were mentioned by Dr. H. B. Turbott, medical officer of health, who returned from the East Coast during the week-end. Swabs taken from contacts were negative with the exception of two which were doubtful.

It was fortunate, Dr. Turbott added, that the outbreak occurred in an isolated country district, for the disease appeared in a virulent form which might easily have turned to a serious epidemic had the cases occurred in a thickly populated area.
