Obituary.

MR. W. WATENE. Tiie death occurred at the Thames Hospital on Sunday of a well-known member of the Watene family, Wirihana (Wilson) Watene, of Kirikiri, at the age of 65. Deceased was one of the chiefs of the Ngatimaru tribe, and a descendant of Marutuahu, through his five sons, Tamatepo, Tainatera, Whanaunga, Te Ngako and Taurukapakapa. Deceased’s grandfather, the late Matene Te Nga, was a cousin of Hotereni Taipari and the late Hoani Nahe, ex-M.P. for the Eastern Maori electorate, was his uncle, all members of the paramount Te Uringahu sub-tribe of the MaruS. He was a brother of the late Tararaana Hei, a Clerk of the Thames Warden’s Court, and Perimona and Toki Watene, of Kirikiri. Deceased was a keen sport, and played for several Thames club football teams and the Thames representatives. He leaves a widow and tAvo sons and one daughter.

MRS. E. THORBURN. * A member of a very old Thames family, Mrs. Elizabeth Thorburn, wife of the late William Lang Thorburn, passed away at her residence, Tararu, last evening. Mrs. Thorburn was born at Auckland, and came to Thames at an early age. During her long residence at Thames Mrs. Thorburn associated herself Avith many philanthropic activities, and Avas ever ready to assist a deserving case of distress. She is survived by three sons and ' three daughters. The sons are: William and AndreAV (Auckland), Lewis (Thames), and the daughters Mesdames SAvales, Eaddy, Hindman (Auckland), and Smith (Thames). Mr. and Mrs. Thorburn celebrated their golden wedding in 1928.
