TOBACCONIST’S THEFT
WELLINGTON MAN FOR SENTENCE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 7 The theft of £7O/19/9, proceeds from the sale of art union tickets on behalf of Messrs Hammond and McArthur, was admitted in the Magistrate’s Court to-day by John Knox Glover.
Evidence was given that Glover had a tobacconist’s business at Newtown, and for the past .18 months had been selling art union tickets on behalf of the firm. Between June 7 and July 16 he was supplied with 808 tickets and sold 601, on which he was to receive 3d a ticket. He later sent a cheque for £7O/19/9, but this was dishonoured. i *';|
The police stated that accused admitted converting the money to his own use to save his business, hoping to borrow from a friend to pay the firm. Accused, who was described as a clerk, was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence.
