COMPANY PROMOTION. In ail address to the newly-formed Technical College Accountancy Students' Association in Auckland on the Stock Exchange at work, Mr G. R. Buttle referred to the number of very successful companies founded in the penfod 1850-1883. Mining loomed large then, he said, hut while those interested in gold mining were busy with their ven'tures, commercial giants were no less active, and it was to those fcjnes that one must look for the founders of nearly all the most prosperous companies' on the share list of to-day. Mr Battle's list of 18 companies included the New Zealand and South British Insurance, the Union Steam Ship, and Auckland Gas Companies, and the Bank of New Zealand and the National Bank. The total capital of the 18 to-day was £18,504,555, and their reserves amounted to £13,114,862.
