SATURDAY’S SPORTS.

SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

Already entries are coming in fast for the primary schools championships, which are to he decided at the High School ground on/Saturday next at the , sports meeting in aid of the Sports Queen. So far entries have been received from as far distant points as Manaia, near Coromandel, and Paeroa and Mangatarata. The race is open to any pupil whatsoever who is attending any primary school in the district, and will be a scratch race. The prizes to the winners, boys and girls, are handsome medals, and should be a fine memento to the occasion. There is also a relay race of 300yds. for teams of four from any primary school, and this also should attract

good entry. For the older one there are several events such as a 75yds. open handicap, a ladies’ bracelet, and a High School boys’ handicap. This latter event is also open to any pupil attending a High. School in the district, and should attract a good field.. On the field sports side there is an item which is invariably very popular with the public, that of an open tug-o’-war for teams of six men. The entry Is 1/- per member, and the winner takes the whole of the entrance money. It is said that a team of fishermen is confidently expecting to carry off the prize, but that, of course, rests in the lap of the gods, since there are several other teams who equally fancy their chances. There will be all sorts of competitions and side-shows on the ground, and a study of the programme will afford fuller information. It is worth noting that entries close for the primary schools events at noon on Friday, as do entries for the open sprint and the High School race. In the case of the two latter events the past two years’ performances must accompany the entry for handicapping purposes.

The secretary is Mr W. Ensor, of Thames, and for the convenience of entrants entries may be left with the Sports Editor at the Star Office. Han-, dicaps will be published in Friday’s “Star.”
