There was a time when the works of Annie S. Swan enjoyed extraordinary! popularity with misses and matrons throughout the English-speaking world, who followed eagerly the adventures of the heroes and heroines of these sound oid romances. With the advent of a .more lurid type of fiction, however, •this popularity has waned considerably, but at the twenty-first anniversary celebrations of the Dunedin Public Library Mr. W. B. McEwan told a story which indicated that loyalty to the Well-known authoress is not altogether a thing of the past. A buxom Scots lassie, said Mr. McEwan, visited the library regularly with her mother, and the pair invariably asked for the works by Annie S. Swan. On one occasion, not a book by tins writer remained on the shelves, and he asked them if they would not care for a work by some other author who wrote stories of a similar type. "No. no," was the firm reply. "Ye ken, I read a passage tae mitheir and she greets, then mither reads a passage tae me, and I greet; then we baith hae a greet thegither."
