RESTORATION OF H.M.S.
VICTORY.
THE KING'S INTEREST.
The King has made suggestions for the restoration of H.M.S. Victory, and these suggestions are being carried out. Admiral Sir George Hope, speaking at Ihe annual meeting of the Society for . iautical Research, said : "On the occasion of his visit, his Majesty discussed with us our plans to complete the work of restoration, and himself made suggestions which we shall endeavour to put into effect. For, although the work of preservation is comthe work of restoration is not." Sir George pointed out that the "Save the Victory" Fund, which was inaugurated in 1922, and realised £75,000, was now exhausted. The Society, however, had raised additional funds, and since they started the work of restoration and preservation in 1923, over £IOO,OOO had been spent upon the ship herself. ' Lacking further financial resources, yet unwilling to leave the work unfinished, they had inquired of the Admiralty whether they did not concur with the Society's opinion that some assistance was due from Navy Votes in respect of the relief afforded by the payments for preservation made by the Society. "I am happy to inform you,*' acldarl S'r George, "that their Lordships' reply is entirely favourable. They share our opinion, and are willing to assume responsibility for the remainder i f> the cost." Sir George added that an Advisory Technical Committee, consisting of members of the Society, had been -nominated to advise the c Admiralty in regard to further work. "We have now done all that human ingenuity can suggest to preserve Nelson's flagship for posterity," ho concluded.
