OBITUARY.

BISHOP CLEARY.

As notified in our columns yesterday Bishop Cleary passed away in the afternoon. .

The Rt. Rev. Henrv William Cleary, D.D., 0.8. E., Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, was born in County Wexford, Ireland, in 1859, being the son of Robert Cleary and Susan Wall. He was educated at St. Aidan's College, Wexford; Maynooth College; Papal University, Rome; and St. Sulpice College, Paris. Ordained priest January 11th, 1885, became assistant priest and nrofessor in Ireland 1885. to 1888 and left for Australia during the latter year. For ten years he worked at Ballarat", Aamilton, and Ararat, Victoria. Coming to New Zealand he was appointed editor of the N.Z. Tablet at Dunedin in January, 1898, which position he held till 1910, when he was ap- • pointed Bishop of Auckland. His consecration was held in Cathedral Ehniscorthy on August 21st, 1910. In 1918 he founded "The Month," a journal devoted to Roman Catholic interests and has edited it continuously. Bishop Cleary served as chaplain to W .Z F'" ? "'bile r-n siW le«ve in Eurooe in 1916-17, and did duty in the trenches in Flanders, where he Avas attached to the 2nd Brigade. He is said to have been the first bishop to? use an aeroolane for work of visitation.

Born in Dunedin in 1881, Dr. Liston was educated there, in Sydney, in Dublin and in Rome and was ordained in the Cathedral, Dunedin, in 1904. He was a. professor at Holy Cross College, Mcsgiel, for six years until" 1910, when he was appointed rector of the college. Frcm that position he came to Auckland, at the end of 1920, "to .help and cheer a noble veteran of the Church's army;'' as he himself said, in acknowledging addresses of welcome from the clergy arid the laity of the diocese.
