REP. CRICKET.

THAMES V. PLAINS.

COURT CUP RETAINED

BOTH THAMES TEAMS WIN.

It was anything but cricket weather on Saturday, when the first of the local rep. fixtures of the Thames Cricket Sub-Association took place on the High School ground. The day was blustery, with heavy rain, and the games had to be stopped on numerous occasions for the players to take shelter.

The Thames A match involved the Court Cup, for which Plains put in a challenge, but the visitors could not handle the mud, dTnd collapsed for 66, of which a very useful 30 was .put on by a new player in -the-. district in the person of K. Graham, of Turua. He scored with great freedom on the off, and is a distinct acquisition to the district.

After the “Star” had gone to press on Saturday, Plains were still at the wickets, and with the score at 41 J. Buchan clean-bowled Graham. He had contributed 30 to the score. The rest of the side could'do little, and the innings closed for 66. For Thames, Cleave and R- Buchan opened to the bowling of A. Kenney and E. Gill. Cleave had ;a life off Kenny’s second.ball, McDonald dropping him in the slips. Both batsmen played the bowling with confidence, taking the score to 52 before R. Buchan fell to Gill. 52—1—30. Wells opened his score with a single. With the score at 55, Graham took over from Kenny, Wells sending his first ball for 4. Another profitable part-, nership ensued, with the score-board showing 99. Candy took over from Gill, five runs coming off his over. Gill relieved Graham at the north end. Cleave (55) retired, Vangioni going in. Wells was dropped a few minutes later off Gill. Both batsmen, under instructions, began hitting out. At 142 Wells (41) retired. A.t 148 Vangioni was caught out, having put on 16..\ G...Buchan relished Gill’s bowling, 24 off one over. The “B” Game.

Thames won the toss, and elected to ,bat, Smith and Baker going to the wickets. Baker went lbw in O’Neil’s second over, but Smith carried on. He was joined by Langlon, ' and both were very severe upon anything on the leg side, Smith scoring frequently with glances and pulls. Smith made 29 and Langdon 39; then Morgan came to the crease. After two .lives in his first strokes he settled down and proceeded to paste the bowling. After lunch, he carried on with Dare, Billing and Hoyle until associated with Otto. After adjournments for rain these two retired, and O’Neil bowled Crawford-Watson neck and crop with his second ball. Two school-boys, Pratt and Twohill, became set, and slammed the bowling in all directions. Finally Randrup got Twohill and the innings closed with 222 on the board. Plains started well, Berney and O’Neil opening to Baker and Dare. Berney was • very steady, and le£t the bulk of the scoring to O’Neil, who used his feet to the bowlers.' These latter could hardly stand on the slippery bowling crease, and the greasy ball had them in trouble. O’Neil went for the bowlers impartially, and a change was made in favour of Hoyle and Crawford-Watson. With 91 on the board Crawford-Watson got O’Neil through Hoyle taking a fine catch in the deep. Hodges, Donaghy and O’Carroll fell to the same bowler, and the Plains men seemed to find the slows hard to handle. Otto, at the other end, was unlucky in having Berney dropped off his third ball,

but Langdon kept the scores down. Mrogan, who came on the tail-enders, bowled very well, his three wickets costing only two runs. Plains’ innings closed for 160. Details: Smith E., c T.
