AT VICE-REGAL EXPENSE.

STORIES AGAINST THEMSELVES HIS EXCELLENCY REMINISCENT Three amusing little stories against Lady Alice and himself were told by His Excellency the Governor-General at the civic dinner given to him at Hamilton.

At one place which they visited the host, he said, decided, before they left, to pay them a compliment. “Your Excellenries,” he said, “it is very difficult to believe you have been here only 24 hours. To us it seems so very much longer.” “At another place we called,” said His Excellency, “the night was cold and dreary, and the attendance at the function given us at the local hall was very small. The chairman of the gathering, in apologising for this, said: “You know you .are the first vice-regal party to visit us. It is very difficult to get people to turn out for a thing of this sort.” In fairness to ourselves, added Sir Charles, I must state that the chairman had forgotten to advertise our coming.

The Governor-General then related an Incident at the expense of Her Excellency. They went one day to an old people’s home. Onp old lady reminded Her Excellency that on her last visit she' had promised next time she came to sing to them. Her Excellency said, "Oh, well, If I promised to do so, I must keep my promise.” She sang a song and then turned to an old lady alongside her and said, “What would you like me to sing now?” Dinner hour was near, and the old lady, doubtless with an eye on ttie clock, replied: "God Save the King.” The stories, needless to say, created much laughter.
