RUMOUR ABOUT BROPHY
HISTORY OF HIS CASE,
(Bv Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Dec. 5. Relative to the" cable about Richard Brophy, formerly second in command of the Byrd expedition, Messrs. Tapley and Co., base agents -for the expedition, state there is no truth m the assertion that an intrgue with a Broadway actress caused his dismissal Brophy was not dismissed. He suffered a severe breakdown in' Dunedin and during his period of incapacity he was unfit to handle the expedition’s affairs so that his resignation was accepted. There was no question of misdemeanour, onlv an unnecessary expenditure arising -from Brophy’s illness. Commander Byrd, was, and is, much concerned over Brouhv’s welfare in the future. In the earlv stages of the. expedition Brophy proved an efficient organiser rendering inestimable service.'
