The Supreme Court opened this jnorning before Mr Justice Smith. There being .no criminal cases, , the Judge was presented with white jgloves to mark the occasion. Ha congratulated the district on the fact that there were no criminal cases.
TWO YEARS’ PROBATION
<Bv Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 3. A young woman named Dorothy Blade, aged 23, who was convicted of stealing a jersey from a city store and a search of whose room disclosed goods to the value of from £6O to'£loo, which she admitted were stolen, was placed by Mr Hunt,. S.M., on two years’ probation, 12 months to be in the Salvation Army Home. Chief Detective Hammond said the accused was a waitress earning two pounds? a week. During the , lunch hour she visited shops having bargain sales and helped herself liberally. The' probation officer said the girl was of good moral character and did not squander money. . Her relatives were respectable and she had never been out of work.
SHEEP STEALING. (By Telegranh.—Press Association.) HAMILTON, Sept. 3. At the Supreme Court. Herbert Henry Ellis (28). a farmer of Haugatilci, who was convicted of stealing fifty-eiglit ewes, was sentenced to 12 months’ imoriscnment. Alfred Nicholas Thomas, for the theft of a generator, was admitted to probation for 12 months and ordered to pay the costs.
