THEPT OF A HORSE.

At the Supreme Court, Whare Matangi was sentenced to six months for the theft of a horse from the Taringamotu Timber Company.
THIRTY YEARS IN GAOL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) . AUCKLAND, Sept. 2. "Your record, prisoner, is one of the most remarkable that has ever came before me," said Mr Justice Herdman at the Supreme Court, when Robert Slade appeared for sentence, having pleaded guilty to charges of breaking, entering' and theft, being unlawfully on premises at night. - and having house-breaking implements in bis pos T session.
Counsel for Slade said that the prisoner was 67 years of age, 30 of which had been spent in gaol. He had come from Australia and found it so difficult to obtain lawful employment that he reverted to crime.
The Judge said Slade started his criminal record in Melbourne in 1890. He was a most travelled criminal, a kind of cosmopolitan burglar. He had operated in Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, St. Helena and Durban, and then came to New -Zealand. The accused was sentenced to five years' hard labour.
