M.P.’S SALARIES.

INCREASE MOOTED. REFORM WILL NOT .SUPPORT 1 . THE PREMIER FAVOURABLE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Aug.,1.4. The question of members’ salaries has been raised again this session and although members are reluctant to discuss the matter there is reason to believe that the Prime Minister has been approached by certain members who lead the movement for an increase. During the short test session in December members saw Sir Joseph Ward on this subject and it was stated that he promised to consider the matter favourably. Tt is now believed that the official opposition may oppose any movement to increase members’ gratuities despite the fact that among the Reformers’ ranks there are some who have agitated for better payment. The grounds on which the increase would be opposed would he' the prevalence of unemployment. Mr. Coates would not commit himself when questioned, but it is believed he is not in sympathy with the movement.
