SHORT SENTENCE FOR TAKER
OF CAR,
(By Telegraph V—press Association.) DUNEDIN, Aug. 12.
At the Police Court, Harry Scott, an ex-tram conductor who was in the employ of the City Corporation, was admitted to three years’ probation and ordered to abstain from liquor on the charge of stealing a block of tram tickets. William Alexander Robertson pleaded guilty to converting car to his own use and with assaulting a constable.
The police stated that the owner of the car missed it from a football match on Saturday. At midnight he saw it being driven by the accused, accompanied by other men. The owner gave chase in a taxi, and, overhauling the accused, he remonstrated with him for taking the car. The occupants of the car gave him a thrashing, and just as the car was moving off a constable jumped on to the running board and also got a rough handling, being punched about the head badly.
Accused refused to disclose the names of his companions. He was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment on the first charge and one month on the second, to be eoneurl’ent.
