SATURDAY, AUGUST 10, 1929. VICTORIOUS AUSSIES.
“With malice towards non#; with charity for all; with firmneo® in tho right, a® God flivaa u® to ae« tho right-" Lincoln.
'The mueh-talked-of hockey match with the Australians has come and gone, and it has proved a useful lesson to everyone concerned. Team work by the visitors won them the match, and team work amongst ourselves won a well-earned eulogium from the Australians. Truly, everyone concerned in preparing for the occasion must be heartily congratulated on the work done. The letter from the team’s manager is no idle testimonial, but a sincere expression of truth, and once again Thames has risen to the occasion and done the right thing. Satisfaction- is expressed on all sides at the financial result, which shows clearly what organisation can do. It is no small matter, however, to organise for such a big issue, but that it was justified is shown by the amount of public support accorded it. The
team’s comments that the ground was the best they had played on in the Dominion must not- be lost sight of, as it proves that the money and work that has been expended on the making of it has been justified. That Thames-Hauraki lost the day is, of course, regrettable, but combination of play is usually the strong suit of a touring team, and while defeat was suffered it was. not a shameful one, our players gaining a considerable amount of respect 'from their doughty opponents. May we express the hope that other overseas visitors may be seen at Thames again in the future.
