DISTRICT HOCKEY.

THAMES-HAURAKI ASSN.

TWO MORE CLUBS FORMED,

DRAW FOR CUP CONTEST. A meeting of the executive of the Thames-Hauraki Hockey Association was held last evening when delegates were present from the Thames, Foundry, Kopuarahi and Turua Clubs, over whom Mr. Crawford-Watson presided. Applications for affiliation in addition to the clubs of last year were received from Kerepeehi, Turua, and Foundry Clubs, making a total of six senior clubs.

It. was resolved to entertain the visiting hockey team from Tauranga on June 3, Messrs. P. Jensen, D. B. Ritchie and L. Crawford-Watson being appointed a committee to make the necessary a rrangemen ts. In connection with the matter of the representative team selectors, aftee some discussion as to the best method of covering the increased district over which the game will he played, it was decided to appoint two selectors, one for the town teams and one for the country teams, Messrs. George Hayes being chosen for the former position and Mr. T. Field (Kopuarahi) for the latter.

It was decided to- apply for reaffiliation with the Auckland Hockey Association.

Visit of Australians.

The President reported that notification had now been received b v the New Zealand Hockey Council that the Australian Hockey Association had accepted the invitation to send a team to tour New Zealand at the conclusion of the tour of Fiji, and that it would he as well if the Thames-Hau-raki Association put its request for a. match as early as possible. It would be necessary to provide a guarantee of the expenses at least of the visitors and to set up a committee to make any preliminary arrangements which might be - needed. It would probably be necessary to appoint a deputation to wait upon the Auckland Hockey Association to enlist their aid to get a match at Thames. Mr. Crawford-Watson pointed out that if v such a match were obtained it would undoubtedly do much to popularise the game both from the Puhlio and the players 5 viewpoint. Since the five-a-side tourney had been staged he liad heard many expressions of surprise at the interesting game hockey was from people who had not seen it before and he considered that if the public gave them the support that they deserved for endeavouring to., get an international side to visit the district it would not be hard to gain the assistance of the controlling authorities. It all boiled down really into a matter of finance.

Similar views were expressed by the delegates from Turua, Messrs. Muller and Aherhart, and Kopuarahi,. Mr. O’Carroll, and it was resolved that the emergency committee (Messrs. L. Crawford-Watson, P. Jensen and G. Kerby) he given power ta act, together with Mr. R. Menzies, to make any arrangements that they found necessary. Improvements to Grounds. The subject'of grounds came up for discussion and the Grounds Committee was given power to effect any drainage operations at Rhodes Park they deemed needed, subject to arrangements with the Thames Rugby Union. Mr. O’Carroll mentioned that in the event of either Turua or Kerepeelii being unable to play on their grounds owing to clashing with other sports fixtures, the Kopuarahi ground would be available for the use of outside teams playing under the Association’s purisdiction. The Turua Club reported that it would be able to play at Turua on the majority of the days allotted. It was agreed "to allow the Turua Club the use of the Association's portable goal posts for this season.

Ladies’ Hockey.

The President reported that he understood that none of the ladies’ teams in the district intended to affiliate for this season. In the light of news just recieved this was just as well for he had received information that the New Zealand Council was making arrangements for the tour of a New Zealand ladies’ team to. South Africa, and intended to make a levy on all ladies’ clubs and associations which controlled ladies’ hockey. Had the Association had any ladies’ olubs affiliated it would have been assessed for the payment of this levy, which would he at the least £3/3/-, but as it had not accepted the affiliation of any ladies’ club it would not have to accept any responsibility for payment, which would fall on the individual ladies’ clubs. Financial Members.

The subject of financial members was discussed at some length the following resolutions finally being carried unanimously:—

“That no club should play a player in its team in the competition who was not financial by June 5, 1929, and that any club playing such a player be declared by the Association to have forfeited the game, and that it be the duty of the secretary of each club to forward to the Association a list of the financial members of his club by June 7.” Gage-Brown Cup Draw.
