DRAINAGE RATING.
THE" HAURAKI UNITED BOARD
COMPLICATED POSITION
REGARDING CLASSIFICATION.
A complicated position has arisen in regard to the incident© of l-ating loir drainage purposes following the am illgamation iof the Horahia and. Hauraki Drainage Boards under the name ot the Haulraki United Drainage Board. Amalgamation was adopted on the finding of Mr. L. B. Campbell, of the Public Works Department, who was specially appointed as a commissioner to decide the issue. At a special meeting of the board Mr. R. H. Heappey moved: —‘ ‘That in futux-e all rates in connection with the old Hauraki Board’s loans be .levied in accordance with the terms and conditions under which these loans were i-aised, and by the terms and conditions laid down by the Minister when amalgamation was decided; also that the classification of the whole united district he reviewed and amended so as to remove the present cases of hardship and unfairness.” . Mr. Heappey said on the union of the two boards the Hauraki United Board adopted what was practically a uniform classification. The effect of this was that in some localities tbe loan rates increased on the average by five times, and in one section from £1 9 s bd to £l6 odd. He considered that a B, C and D system of classification should be reverted tb.
